Laser Therapy vs Red Light Therapy: What Is the Difference?

Both use light, but delivery, dose and supervision differ. Here is how to think about it.

People often use "laser therapy" and "red light therapy" interchangeably. They overlap, but they are not the same thing in practice.

What they share

Both fall under photobiomodulation: red and near-infrared light absorbed by tissue, with effects thought to involve mitochondrial activity, local circulation and repair signalling.

How they differ

Consumer red light panels spread relatively low-power light across a wide area, mostly interacting at shallower depths. Therapeutic lasers deliver a focused, coherent beam at a controlled dose to a defined region, and longer near-infrared wavelengths reach deeper structures such as joints and thicker muscle.

Why dose and supervision matter

The useful question is not which device sounds more advanced. It is whether the wavelength, power and dose suit the tissue being treated — a decision that comes from an examination. Too little energy does nothing measurable; too much can be counterproductive.

How it is used here

Austin Chiropractic Care uses more than one therapeutic laser system so the approach can be matched to the patient and the treatment goal, rather than applying one device to every case.

Frequently asked questions

Is red light therapy the same as laser therapy?
They overlap but differ in delivery. Panels spread lower-power light broadly and superficially; therapeutic lasers deliver a focused, dosed beam to a specific region under clinical supervision.
